May 31, 2023 -- On May 29, 2023, the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) denied AMFA’s application for certification at Air Canada. The Board found that the application was not filed during an open period specified under the Canada Labour Code—a technicality manufactured by Air Canada and the IAMAW.

April 10, 2023 -- Last week, AMFA completed legal briefing in connection with its Air Canada certification application. In its final reply, AMFA addressed the extensive legal and factual errors contained within the IAMAW’s sur-reply.

March 27, 2023 -- AMFA writes briefly to endorse the opinions and bargaining history presented by Mr. James Burden in his March 16, 2023 letter. Based on his experiences as an IAMAW negotiator, Mr. Burden is uniquely positioned to describe how a lack of community of interest between skilled maintenance employees and other employees within the TMOS group has frustrated collective bargaining efforts.

March 21, 2023 -- Ordinarily, as a matter of courtesy, AMFA and its attorneys would consent to procedural accommodations requested by an opposing counsel. Such courtesy cannot be extended in the present instance. As documented in its reply brief, AMFA has received numerous reports of IAMAW retaliation against Air Canada employees suspected of supporting AMFA’s organization efforts. The Board’s Officers have heard directly from those affected employees. Additional rebuttal briefing would delay the consideration of AMFA’s application by a number of weeks. In the meantime, AMFA believes that the IAMAW will continue its retaliation efforts.

March 21, 2023 -- On March 20, 2023, AMFA’s attorneys filed the Union’s response to briefs submitted by Air Canada and the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (“IAMAW”) opposing AMFA’s request for certification of a bargaining unit at Air Canada of skilled maintenance workers.

March 2, 2023 -- The Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association (AMFA) continues to expand its footprint in Canada as Aircraft Maintenance Engineers (AMEs) and skilled trade groups from Air Canada have sought union representation with AMFA. AMFA was first certified as the bargaining agent in Canada last year at L3 Harris MAS. In January, AMFA filed an application with the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) seeking representation of the AMEs at WestJet Airlines, and today filed after another grassroots organizing campaign for the AMEs and skilled trade groups at Air Canada.
