It is not an industrial union and represents only airline technicians and related employees in the craft or class in accordance with the National Mediation Board Rules and their dictates. There is Much Going On
By Louie Key, National Director

It is certainly a very busy time around our Union. Since the July filing for mediation at Southwest Airlines and our first session coming up at the end of next month, we have hosted the Aircraft Engineers International 2015 Annual Congress in Seattle, conducted the Alaska Airlines Annual Wage Review, filed our Section 6 Notice for the Alaska Airlines negotiations, and held our Joint Advisory Council Meeting. Additionally, all of the locals have been conducting General Membership Meetings (GMMs) and are preparing for the upcoming Local Officer Elections as well as the National Convention and National Officer Elections happening next year.

Is Labor a Brick?
By Aaron Hansen, Assistant National Director

Recently, I came across a letter that a friend of mine had written to American Airlines management responding to a comment that was made during an interview with Bloomberg News referring to labor as bricks in a backpack. The upper management person being interviewed was a senior VP with American Airlines that had served for less than ten years. Just as you can imagine, his statement alluded to how bricks in a backpack are heavy and would weigh you down.

Resolving Contractual Disputes Through Arbitration
By Earl Clark, Region I Director

As most of you are aware, we are either in negotiations or getting ready to enter negotiations at our represented carriers. When language is written in negotiations, the intent of the language and how it is applied and practiced is crucial. We now need to be aware of and concerned as the companies have decided to reinterpret past negotiated written language. They no longer interpret the language the same way we do, which gives us only one option - to grieve these disputes. As we go through the grievance procedure and cannot come to an agreement on the intent of the language with our carriers, our next course of action as defined in our agreements is to submit the grievance for arbitration.

Support Your Representatives
By Michael P. Nelson, Region II Director
As you are aware, AMFA is a uniquely democratic labor union where each member has the right to become as involved within the Association as they care to be. There are very minimal restrictions to be eligible to hold a Local or National position throughout our Association. AMFA is a craft union which focuses on its members while remaining openly fiscally responsible and, throughout its history, there has been a trusted reliance on committed part-time and volunteer members.

Informed+Participation=Engaged
By Justin Madden, National Secretary/Treasurer
October is a great month for a sports fan. Baseball is in the playoffs, football (college and pro) is in full swing, and hockey is just starting its long and arduous season. Perhaps some of you are more than just a casual fan of one of these sports and have a fantasy team where you play against your friends and co-workers each week. If this is you, you comb through information each week and research players and conditions in an effort to win - you are engaged.
